Etsy listing photos: how to use all 10 slots so buyers actually add to cart

Etsy shoppers browse differently from Amazon shoppers. They are not comparing spec sheets, they are deciding whether a thing feels worth owning and whether the seller behind it seems real. That means your photos are doing two jobs at once: describing the product and doing the work a brand would otherwise do.
Start with resolution and the crop
Etsy recommends images at least 2000 pixels on the shortest side. Go higher rather than lower, because Etsy's zoom rewards detail and handmade items live or die on texture. Remember that your first image gets cropped for the search grid, so keep a margin of breathing room around the product and preview how the thumbnail looks before you commit. A composition that is perfect at full size can lose its subject entirely once the grid crops it.
The ten slots, one job each
A plan that works across most Etsy categories: 1, hero shot on a clean, calm background. 2, the product in a real setting so buyers can imagine it in their home. 3, a scale shot next to something familiar - a hand, a mug, a coin. 4, a close-up of the material or stitch. 5, all color or size variations in one frame. 6, the back or the underside, the part cagey sellers hide. 7, packaging as it arrives, which is a huge trust signal for gifts. 8, a size or care graphic. 9, the item in use. 10, your workspace or process shot. Nine of those need no studio at all.
The scale shot is not optional
The single most common Etsy review complaint is that the item is smaller than the buyer expected. Dimensions in the description do not fix it, because almost nobody translates centimeters into a mental picture. One photo with a hand or a common object in frame prevents a whole category of refunds and one-star reviews, and it costs nothing but a second shot.
Keep one visual language across the shop
Etsy buyers frequently land on one listing and then browse your whole shop. If every listing has a different background, a different white balance and a different mood, the shop reads as a reseller. Pick one background tone, one lighting direction and one prop family, and hold them across every listing. This is the cheapest branding a small shop will ever get.
Video: 5 to 15 seconds, no sound needed
Etsy listing videos autoplay muted, which means they are motion, not storytelling. The most effective ones are boringly simple: a slow rotation, a hand picking the item up, a fabric moving. Skip titles and voiceover. Anything that needs sound to make sense is wasted here.
When AI images make sense on Etsy
Etsy buyers are more sensitive to authenticity than buyers on any other marketplace, so be deliberate. Use generated images for the clean hero shot, for scenes that place your real product in a styled room, and for size and care graphics. Keep genuine photographs for texture close-ups, process shots and anything that shows your hands at work - those are exactly the images that make an Etsy shop feel like an Etsy shop, and no generator improves on them.
